There’s a writer inside all of us. Okay, for some of us it’s deep deep down buried underneath a lot of other stuff. But it’s there. We were born to learn language and to express emotions and to communicate with others. You don’t need to be famous or have published anything to be considered a writer.
Each month I will offer a writing prompt–a question or a quote or a thought–to give you a jumpstart into writing. For those of you who fall more on the creative side, I will also post a story starter.
Here’s the best part. Because writing is meant to be read by other readers, I would LOVE to publish a few of your responses every month. If are a subscriber and you write something you’re proud of, something that’s interesting, or a piece you simply would like to share, email me on my contact page. If you’re not a subscriber, what are you waiting for? Sign up and join the fun!

What YOU’RE Writing
December 2025 Writing Prompt: New Year’s Resolutions Reflection If you know anything about me by now, you know that I’m a huge proponent of revision. My EN101 students could tell you firsthand that I ask them to reflect ad nauseam. But I really believe that in this fast-paced world, we don’t spend enough time slowing…

What YOU’RE Writing
November 2025 A Thank You Note Maybe it’s all that gratitude I’ve been practicing with a few friends that brought me to this place. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not suddenly a saint of thankfulness or a perpetually grateful person moving forward. (If you know me, you know December is my most Grinchy month. I’m…

What YOU’RE Writing
(September 2025) Gratitude journals Have you ever kept a gratitude journal? I haven’t. Gratitude journals fall in the same category for me as seasonal home decorating or creative crafts to do with kids. They are things I wish I wanted to do. And so instead, I marvel at other people who actually do these things either…

What YOU’RE Writing (September 2025)
Writing Prompt: Autumn My feelings toward autumn are complex. Okay, maybe they’re not complex, but at least I am aware that my feelings toward this season are perhaps a bit more dreary than many others. I am such a summer lover that I cannot truly appreciate the other seasons for what they have to offer.…

What YOU’RE Writing (August 2025)
Writing Prompt: Write yourself a letter Letter writing is such an important genre, and yet it is becoming a lost art. Rarely do any of us send out hand-written letters in the mail; most often we all give into the ease and efficiency of an email or a text. But there’s something about writing our…

What YOU’RE writing (July 2025)
Writing Prompt: Summertime Poem This month I want to offer a bit of a challenge, and perhaps a break from the typical reflective journal writing. Many of us do not claim to be poetry writers, either because we do not love reading poetry or we admit that writing poetry feels to difficult and “scares” us.…

Barefoot Stories (June 2025)
National Go Barefoot Day was celebrated on June 1. It holds two purposes: 🗺️ Write the places your feet have traveled Visualize your life as a walking journey—where have your feet taken you, literally or metaphorically? 🌞 Remember a barefoot summer moment Let a warm memory surface—can you feel the grass, the heat, the joy?…

YOUR Turn : What you’re writing (April 2025)
Writing Prompt: Rebirth and Resurrection Christians celebrated Easter in the month of April, remembering a time when Jesus died and then rose again. To me, it is not coincidental that Easter occurs in the spring, a season in the Midwest associated with rebirth and renewal. Write about what rebirth and renewal mean to you. Maybe…
